I channeled my inner nerdy self for three days last August 25-27, 2017. For the first time, I attended the AsiaPOP Comicon Manila 2017 at the SMX Convention Center and I had a blast!
The venue was packed with cosplayers roaming around, from kids to adults. There were people dressed up as the Daredevil, characters from DC and Marvel, Star Wars, Stranger Things, anime characters and gaming characters like Overwatch, Dota 2 and League of Legends, but my favorite group of cosplayers are the ones who were dressed up as the characters from Game of Thrones!
The first thing I did was visit Netflix’s booth which by far was the largest booth in the entire convention. There were 2 huge screens near the entrance which showed trailers from new and returning shows like, The Defenders, Jessica Jones, The Punisher, Riverdale and Stranger Things. Their booth was filled with sets from different Netflix shows like Stranger Things, Riverdale and other shows. After touring the entire Netflix booth, I headed out to visit some other booths like Comic Odyssey who sells comic books, the Walk of Fame which consists the booths of famous cosplayers and artists like Canvas Cosplay, Haiden Hazard, Jin, Myrtle Sarrosa, Pion Kim, Carl Potts, Quiccs, Rodney Ramos, Shoji Kawamori and Whilce Portacio.
I also went around to visit the Iron Throne at Sky Cable’s booth though I didn’t get the chance to sit on it since the line was so long.
Magic: The Gathering’s booth was filled with card players who were battling each other and some were there to learn the game for the first time.
A boxing ring can be seen at the center stage. There were professionals who had a wrestling match and a lot of people had fun watching them. There was this contest which was called “The Battle of The Honeybees” wherein two people would wear a giant bee costume and just basically wrestle each other and it was hilarious!
Overwatch fans had the chance to play at Predator’s booth. People were rooting for their favorite characters while players did their best to win the game. They were selling Predator shirts and Overwatch lanyards but it was already sold out when I decided to buy one for myself.
At the Creative Circle section of the convention, I got the chance to meet artists like John Tindall, Raymund Lee, Jeffery Benitez, Carlo Pagulayan, Omi Remalante and the people behind Fandom Feels Ph. I bought some of their works and also got them all signed and had a photo with some of them!
Food and drinks were sold near the dining area by LeMOON & Biggs, Polland Hopia, Zagu, Binalot, Backyard Kitchen, Superjay, Midnight Bite, Waffles, Fruitas, The Big 1, Krispy Kreme and Manila Water.
At the main stage, I had the chance to watch artists, cosplayers and celebrities talk about the projects that they had. These included La Luna Sangre, Toy Panel with Jason Freeny, Quiccs and Simone Legro, a live performance by Serena Kozuki, The Cage, The Cage Kids Category, Social Media Panel with Cha Ocampo, Janina Vela and Patrice Averillo, Comic Panel, the Marvel Showcase, Cosplay Panel Session, Saving Sally Showcase, Slapshock performance and the Game of Thrones Pageant.
My favorite main stage moment was meeting the cast of Stranger Things, Gaku Space, Tyler Hoechlin and Ray Fisher. I was fan girling and I couldn’t help it.
Overall, my first AsiaPOP Comicon Manila was an awesome experience and I can’t wait to go back next year! To everyone I met there, thank you so much! You guys really made my day!
